Lyrics:
Game over, game
The game is over
Game over, game
You lose
Invincible is what you think you are
But you're just so typical
Though you think that you're a star
You act like everyone revolves around you
Baby, you dropped the ball
And now the game is through
'Cause you tried to play both sides
You got caught up in your lies
And now you're running, you're running out of time
Chorus:
You played yourself (Game over, game)
But did you, did you think that you could really find love
From someone else
You're making moves, you're gonna lose, you know
You played yourself (Game over, game)
And now you're thinkin', thinkin' you can get one by me
But you'll never win, but you'll never win
Try again 'cause the game is over
The game is over
Take it personal 'cause I did when you cheated on me
You may be beautiful
But there's more that the eye can't see
You're so predictable
The way you calculate each move
Heads I win, tails you lose because you don't have the right to choose
'Cause you tried to play both sides
You got caught up in your lies
And now you're running, you're running out of time
Chorus
How could you think that you could do me like that?
Running behind my back
How could you do me like that?
Now the game is over
How could you think that you could do me like that?
And now you want me back
How could you do me like that?
Now the game is over
How could you think that you could do me like that?
Do me like that, do me like that?
Chorus repeat
Game over
[end]
Although this could be considered the Space Cowboy of Celebrity, this song doesn't have quite as intelligent lyrics. Still, as a concept song (the concept being video games), it is well written lyrically and musically.
Some critics observe a strong Michael Jackson influence in the album, but I only see it in this song (of those written by JC). [If you care to enlighten me about other MJ similarities, please do as I am not a MJ expert either.] I see the influence (late 1980s style) in the verse "'Cause you tried to play both sides...".
As mentioned above, this is a concept song (meaning it started as an idea, then lyrics and music stemmed from that) similar to Space Cowboy and Digital Get Down. Unlike the previous two (DGD did have some internet-type sounds which is harder to accomplish than TGIO), this song takes the concept a step further incorporating video game sounds (notably Pac Man) throughout the entire song, which is inventive in its own right. That is why I graded the music itself a bit higher than the lyrics.
Grade (on a 5-point scale):
Lyrics: 3.8
Music: 4.2
Overall: 4.0
